On May 15th at 6pm The Elephant in the Room officially kicked off its first event. Conceived as a community outreach effort on behalf of the Republican Party in Delaware, we donated our evening to helping the Food Bank. Among those attending were local candidates for public office: Dave Tancredi and Jim Starzman, who are running for Recorder of Deeds for New Castle County and Representative of the 19th district in Wilmington respectively. Ten people participated in all, and we had a great time.
We were asked to sort frozen foods, specifically meats, for distribution the next day. The Food Bank services many pantries throughout Delaware which feed thousands of Delawareans daily. Hunger issues are enormously important in our state, as anywhere from 25% to 37% of state residents receive food assistance today. This is largely accomplished thanks to the hard and dedicated work of volunteers and groups like The Elephant in the Room. Not only to provide food through donations, but to help make sure it arrives on time and in good condition for those most in need.
The Elephant in the Room will be receiving t-shirts shortly. Those who attended the event on Thursday will be receiving their shirts as soon as possible, and hopefully will come out to future events so that they can wear them while volunteering. The idea being that the shirts will be a helpful visible cue of the impact that we have in the community. Wearable both in day to day life as well as when the wearer is participating in helping improve their state. The symbol of the outreach effort is to confront the serious issues facing us today, and refusing to stay silent in addressing them.
In all, the ten people who attended were: Jeffrey Barker and Angela Barker, Dave Tancredi, Jim Starzman, Nancy and Gary Cleveland, Genie and Dave Leake, Dr. Kenneth James and Jesse Gove. As the organizer of the event, I am extremely grateful for having so many dedicated people come out. I am also very confident that many others who were unable to attend will be able to participate in future events. The Elephant in the Room is intended to become a continued and sustained effort which builds bridges and connections between the Delaware Republican Party and the general public of Delaware.
